PRESS RELEASE - MARCH 2009
Onder Invloed in the City visits Glasgow
Dutch music journalist films Glasgow musicians covering their influences
This March, the Dutch music journalist Matthijs van der Ven is bringing his project ‘Onder Invloed’, which means ‘Under The Influence’ to Glasgow, Scotland. For ‘Onder Invloed in the City’ he’ll ask Glasgow musicians to cover songs by their influences for his camera and he’ll film a documentary about the places and people important to the local music scene.
Onder Invloed in the City is part of the succesful non-profit Onder Invloed project, for which musicians record a session with covers of their musical influences. The videos of these session are published on OnderInvloed.com, and other sites like YouTube, MySpace, the iTunes-Store and Facebook. Already a lot of wellknown Dutch and international bands played sessions for the project, that’s now spreading it’s wings abroad.
Glasgow
Every Onder Invloed in the City is based around one or two central musicians, in this case being Davie Lawson and Paul Tasker of the Doghouse Roses. Together with Van der Ven, they’re inviting friends and well-known musicians from Glasgow to come and record a session. This will result in a huge special, because there’ll be around ten musicians playing two or three covers each.
Next to the sessions, Van der Ven will film a documentary about the city, guided by Lawson and Tasker. The documentary will show the entire city, but will focus strongly on the people, places and attractions important for the local music scene.
Onder Invloed in the City will produce three different end results:
* Sessions: a huge Onder Invloed special with sessions by local musicians
* Documentary: a documentary about the city with a strong focus on place that influence the local music scene
* Blog: during the stay there’ll be a online blog with daily stories, photos and videos at http://glasgow.onderinvloed.com
Van der Ven
Matthijs van der Ven is a Dutch music journalist who has written, edited and filmed for wellknown Dutch music magazines like 3VOOR12, 3VOOR12/Utrecht and MusicFrom.nl before starting his own project Onder Invloed. The idea for the project started in the summer of 2007, while reading Bob Dylan’s ‘Chronicles’.
Dylan writes about the musicians who’ve been an influence to him in his younger years. After looking up most of the names Dylan mentioned, the idea came up to ask musicians to cover their favourite bands or singers, on camera, to put the spotlight on both the great songs as the musicians who play the sessions.
Musicians
So far there’s been a good mix of Dutch, international, unknown and wellknown musicians who took part in the project. Amongst others there were: The Redwalls (USA); Davie Lawson, Doghouse Roses (Scotland); Mia Silvas (England); Simon Angell (guitarist Patrick Watson, Canada); GEM-singer Maurits Westerik, Lucky Fonz III, De Staat, Nobody Beats The Drum, Alamo Race Track, Bettie Serveert, Charlie Dée, and Paulusma (The Netherlands).
Van der Ven and his sound engineer Ro Halfhide will visit Glasgow from Monday the 16th untill Monday the 23rd of March.
